Topic:

Using the country figures in the 2007 Asia Population Data file (p.2 of the "Data, Measures, Concepts" section of the Unit Booklet):
(a) map
(b) describe and
(c) attempt to explain the geographic patterning of female life expectancy at birth levels across Asia.

 

Notes:
  • Do not include the countries of Western Asia in your analysis.

  • For your map(s) use the choropleth technique illustrated on p.15 of the "Population Data, Measures, Concepts" section of the Unit Booklet. Notes on choropleth mapping and examples of the technique can be found in the "Other Resources" section of the GEOS219 web site. http://www.es.mq.edu.au/courses/GEOS219/resource.htm

  • Two outline maps of the region are provided on pp.16-17 of the "Population Data, Measures, Concepts" section of the Unit Booklet. Copies of the map (pdf and tif formats) are also available on the GEOS219 web site. http://www.es.mq.edu.au/courses/GEOS219/resource.htm

  • For the explanation part of the exercise you should draw on some of the social and economic variables in the data file, plus reading on the topic.

  • The weightings for the various parts of the assignment are as follow:
       (a)    map (3 marks);
       (b)    description (3 marks);
       (c)    explanation (14 marks).


  • Do parts (b) and (c) separately in your submitted paper under the sub-headings of "Description" and "Explanation".

Maximum Length: 1,500 words. (Put word count on Assignment Cover Sheet).
